# Connect GMX

<PlanNote plan="basic" />

You connect GMX over **CalDAV** with your GMX address and an **app-specific password**. You create it in two minutes right in your GMX settings — after that everything runs automatically, and sync picks up changes **every 5 minutes**.

:::caution[The most common pitfall]
For external programs like Kalender Sync, GMX requires an **app-specific password** — your **regular GMX password won't work here**.
:::

## 1. Create an app-specific password

1. Open [account.gmx.net](https://account.gmx.net/), sign in and go to **"Login & Security"**.
2. Scroll to **"App-specific passwords"** and click **"Manage app-specific passwords"**.
3. Click **"Create new app-specific password"**, give it a name (e.g. "Kalender Sync") and confirm with **"Next"**.
4. **Copy the password shown** — for security reasons it's only displayed once.

## 2. Connect in Kalender Sync

1. In the dashboard: **"Connect calendar"** → **"GMX"** → **"Continue"** to the form.
2. Enter your **GMX email address** (e.g. `name@gmx.de` or `name@gmx.net`).
3. Paste the **app-specific password** and click **"Test & Connect"** — Kalender Sync verifies the connection immediately.

## If "sign-in failed" appears

- Did you really use the **app-specific** password, not your regular GMX password?
- Best to paste the password fresh instead of typing it.
- Password deleted in your GMX settings in the meantime? Simply create a new one (step 1).

## Ending access

In Kalender Sync: [remove the calendars](https://docs.kalender-sync.de/en/connect-calendar/disconnect/). You can also delete the app-specific password at [account.gmx.net](https://account.gmx.net/) any time — access ends immediately.
